The Austin YMCA, with eight centers in the Greater Austin area and serving more than 100,000 people annually, contracted with Breakaway Public Relations in June of 2021 to bring fresh and broader attention to various programs, new and old.

Coming out of Covid lockdowns, the Y was developing new ways to deliver upon its mission to improve health and wellbeing, and inspire action in and across the many diverse communities it serves.

Most people are well aware of the physical fitness and health benefits provided by a Y membership, but less know about the organization’s work to aid in food insecurity, mental health, childcare (Extend-a-Care Y is the largest provider of after-school child care in the Austin area), diversity, arts and pre-school education.

Breakaway PR works with the Y to coordinate ongoing media relations efforts to enhance awareness and understanding of a wide range of programming, some created to respond to emergency needs such as free access to facilities to those impacted by the spring tornadoes in 2022. Our media and influencer relations campaigns aim to not only build awareness, but drive participation and action, whether attending a camp, practicing water safety or attending a racial healing seminar.

In the course of more than 12 months, Breakaway has worked to secure more than six million audience views (online) across more than 28 on and offline regional media platforms.

The YMCA has seen membership levels rise to 75% of pre-Covid levels offering 100% of its programming. After-school care is at maximum capacity and will expand as soon as staffing allows.
