The kickoff to summer officially begins on June 21, but with Texas you never really know. Whether you are taking your annual beach trip or lounging by Lady Bird Lake, it’s difficult to escape the sun and frankly we don’t really want to. The big question remains… are you prepared? We’re big fans of beauty at Breakaway and sometimes it’s the little things that make all the difference. Grab your shopping list while we share some tips for a safe skincare regimen.

Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen.

There’s no such thing as too much sunscreen. Unless, you have that dreaded white cast, but even then – sometimes it’s necessary. It’s a simple tip, but often forgotten or not emphasized enough. If you’re going to be outside for long periods of time, make sure to apply a minimum SPF of 30 at least 30 minutes before going out. More importantly, re-application is key and recommended every two hours. Whenever possible, avoid chemical sunscreens that contain oxybenzone as these are known to cause hormone disruptions. We’d recommend Farmacy’s Green Screen, H-E-B Solutions Oxybenzone Free Sunscreen and Krave Beauty’s The Beet Shield.

Schedule a free skin cancer screening.

Did you know that Austin offers many free screening options? Thanks to The Shade Project for providing a list of participating locations. After all, it’s easier to maintain and prevent versus repair. Schedule your appointment early because these slots can fill pretty quickly! The nonprofit even donates sunscreen if you’re hosting an outdoor event, inventory permitting.

Cleanse and take off your makeup at the end of every night.

A simple tip that makes all the difference. When you take off makeup, skincare and sunscreen at the end of the day, you are allowing your skin to breathe and preventing acne from making an appearance. A good cleanse goes a long way! You’d be amazed what one (or two) cleanse sessions will do for acne scars, discoloration and uneven texture. There is usually a layer of dead skin that’s begging to come off and your skin will naturally look brighter because of it. Follow up this routine with your favorite moisturizer. Our favorites are Tatcha’s Water Cream, Farmacy’s Honey Drop and Sephora’s Nourishing Moisturizer. Our recommended cleansing wipes are made by Simple Skincare.

Drink lots of water.

It’s a free regimen and affects your body in big ways. Water aids in digestion and helps remove toxins that can clog up your pores and dull your skin. Drinking water throughout the day will create a healthy glow and reduce regular appearances of acne – at least eight glasses of water per day is recommended.

It’s time for a spa night.

Celebrate the summer with your favorite mask! Everyone needs to be pampered every once in a while and it’s even better when you can add family, friends and wine. Our favorites are Boscia’s Black Charcoal and MATCHA Magic Super-Antioxidant masks, Elemis Peptide 4 Thousand Flower Mask and Drunk Elephant’s T.L.C. Sukari Babyfacial.

Switch to clean skincare.

Sephora has a Clean at Sephora category that allows you to eliminate harmful ingredients from your daily routine. The green leaf seal assures you that the product is free of sulfates SLS and SLES, parabens, formaldehyde, phthalates, mineral oils and oxybenzone, among others.

Avoid a sleepless summer.

We’ve all been guilty of this at some point. We have too many fun events planned and forget to schedule in some sleep. It’s easy to do when the season calls for endless boat parties, happy hours, brunch dates and movie nights, but it’s the cause of dark circles and bags under the eyes – one thing we don’t want to pack on our next flight.
